Human Society and its Environment (HSIE)

In human society and its environment (HSIE), both subjects of history and geography are mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 10.

Students learn specific historical and geographical concepts and skills in history and geography. They also have an opportunity to learn more about people and the societies and environments in which they live through elective subjects in Years 7 to 10 (Stages 4 to 5).

A large number of individual subjects make up the key learning area of HSIE, in which students:

Stage 4 and Stage 5

In Stage 4 HSIE, students begin building their understanding of how societies function and how the past and present are connected. Through the study of mandatory History and Geography, students develop essential research, inquiry and analytical skills while exploring people, places and events that have shaped the world we live in today.

History (Mandatory)

In Stage 4 History, students explore key historical events, periods and sources to build understanding of the past and how it shapes the present. Students develop skills in research, analysis and historical interpretation.

Geography (Mandatory)

Stage 4 Geography focuses on the interactions between people, places and environments. Students learn to analyse environmental processes, cultural patterns and spatial relationships to make sense of real-world issues.

Stage 5

In Stage 5 HSIE, students deepen their understanding of modern society and global change. Through the continued study of mandatory History and Geography, students refine their research, writing and analytical skills while examining contemporary issues and significant historical developments that continue to shape the modern world.

History (Mandatory)
Stage 5 History focuses on the modern world and Australia’s place within it. Students explore significant global events including the Industrial Revolution, World War I and World War II, the Cold War and the development of rights and freedoms. Through the study of primary and secondary sources, students develop the ability to analyse perspectives, evaluate historical interpretations and construct well-structured arguments. The course strengthens critical thinking and written communication skills, providing a strong foundation for senior history studies.
Geography (Mandatory)
Stage 5 Geography examines contemporary environmental and social issues affecting Australia and the wider world. Students investigate topics such as sustainable environments, urbanisation, environmental change and global development. Through geographical inquiry and fieldwork experiences, students learn to interpret data, evaluate real-world challenges and propose informed solutions. This course builds strong analytical and problem-solving skills while fostering an understanding of global citizenship and sustainability.

Stage 5 Electives

In Stage 5, students have the opportunity to extend their interests within HSIE by selecting elective subjects. These courses allow students to explore specific areas such as history, geography, commerce and global studies in greater depth, while continuing to develop strong research, analytical and communication skills in preparation for senior study.

History Elective
History Elective explores selected topics in greater depth, allowing students to investigate significant events, movements and historical interpretations. This subject builds analytical and essay writing skills ahead of Stage 6 history options
Geography Elective
Elective Geography extends students’ understanding of physical and human processes that shape places and environments. Students investigate global issues such as urbanisation, sustainability, and environmental management.
Commerce
Commerce equips students with a practical understanding of business, economic decision-making, financial literacy and consumer rights. Students learn how markets function and how individuals and businesses interact in the economy.

Stage 6

In Stage 6, students can choose from a range of specialised HSIE courses that deepen their understanding of society, history, economics, law and global issues. These subjects develop advanced research, analytical and critical thinking skills, preparing students for success in the Higher School Certificate and future study or career pathways.

Ancient History
Ancient History allows students to investigate ancient civilisations, archaeological sources, and historical narratives. Through the study of societies like Egypt and Greece, students develop historical inquiry and interpretation skills
Business Studies
Business Studies introduces students to key concepts in managing and operating businesses. Topics include business environments, marketing, human resources and planning for success.
Economics
Economics examines how societies allocate resources and make economic decisions. Students explore markets, economic policies, trade, and the impact of economic issues on individuals and nations.
Geography
Stage 6 Geography develops students’ understanding of people–environment interactions, spatial patterns and global change. Students examine geographic themes such as population, sustainability and climate.
Legal Studies
Legal Studies introduces the Australian legal system, the role of law in society, rights and responsibilities, and how legal processes shape community outcomes.
Modern History
Modern History provides a deep investigation into significant historical events and movements from c.1750 to the present, helping students understand contemporary world issues.
Society & Culture
Society & Culture explores social organisation, culture, identity, social change and global connections. Students analyse how societies function and how individuals relate to social structures.
